The Chinese Paper Lanterns were originally released to bring good luck and prosperity many thousands of years ago. They are known today by various names, such as, Fire Lanterns, Floating Lanterns or Sky Lanterns.
Their traditional name is Koom Fay / Khom Loy.
Chinese Paper Lanterns as Fireworks
These paper lanterns are now used today as a replacement for fireworks. You will see these lanterns released nowadays at celebratory events such as, weddings, birthdays, Christmas in fact any occasion.
We all know that fireworks are great but they never last very long, and are dangerous if not handled correctly and generally fairly expensive. These flying lanterns are relatively inexpensive and can easily last anything up to 20 minutes in the sky. there a re many many stories from around the world reporting that UFOs have been sighted!
Chinese Paper Lanterns are Biodegradeable
The lanterns are made out of a bio-degradeable lightweight paper material. They are generally about 48 inches high and come in many different colors. The frame is made out of a very light bamboo frame that is quickly replenished. When these Chinese Paper Lanterns burn out, they simple fall safely to the ground where they bio-degrade.
It was believed that wishes which were written out the outside of the lantern, would rise up into the sky and eventually become true. We know how much fun can be had with Chinese Paper Lanterns.
